Police say 18-year-old JCPenney employee Rube Lopez was caught on camera stealing $5,789 in merchandise during the last month at the Rivergate Mall location. Lopez would scan items at her register and then void them, still placing them in the shopping bag. Her mother, who had selected the items, would then exit the store with the bags of unpaid merchandise. Lopez wrote a statement to the store’s loss prevention manager, Steve Gray, admitting to the thefts and stating she was willing to pay for the items taken.
