This story is brought to you by Scoop: Nashville as part of the #bspotter / #VisitMusicCity series which features tourist and downtown-related arrests in Music City.
19-year-old Malachi Matthews was observed riding around in a blue 2002 GMC Envoy that Joan Wells had reported stolen near Long Hollow Pike and Main Street on the afternoon of August 13th. Officers were patrolling the area when they noticed Matthews pull in behind the Long Hollow Plaza. Officers requested additional units and detained Matthews inside the establishment. Under Miranda, Matthews stated that several weeks ago, a little after 1:30 a.m., he was around the North Nashville area, needing to get to his Goodlettsville apartment.
Matthews explained that he realized buses were not operating at that time and that it was a long walk back to Goodlettsville. Because of this, he started scouting for cars and located Joan Wells’ GMC Envoy at Renewal House on Clarksville Pike. Matthews explained that the car had the keys inside, so he took it. Officers found the keys to the vehicle in Matthews’s front right pocket after arresting him. Matthews was then taken into custody for theft.
Malachi Matthews was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail on August 13th, charged with theft. A judicial commissioner set his bond at $2,500.
