MNPD & TSU remove officers from working downtown Nashville’s private ‘mercenary’ police force

As of last week, administrations of both the Metro Nashville and the Tennessee State University Police Departments have stopped scheduling officers to work secondary employment on the Downtown Partnership’s private police force, described as “mercenaries” by some, including Mayoral Candidate Alice Rolli. While MNPD says it was a “mutual decision” between them and the PSO (Private Security Organization), Jack Byrd, who manages the PSO, tells Scoop: Nashville the decision was solely his. The PSO has become controversial in recent weeks over reported ‘homeless roundups’ to clear up the area for tourists. A statement from an MNPD spokesperson ties the scheduling pause to an “insurance issue,” while TSU did not comment on their reasoning for stopping the program permanently. The remainder of the officers left working for the troubled PSO are primarily from Millersville PD & THP.

Metro Nashville Police initially responded to a 3rd party call about a domestic dispute early Tuesday morning. They met with 25-year-old Maseehullah Feda and his wife, who explained they were a married couple and were recently-arrived refugees from Afghanistan. As police were reviewing their provided and valid Employment Authorization cards they found the wife’s age to be 15. While allowable with permission in the country in which they were married (and also in Hawaii, Missouri, Montana, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire), police were not going to allow it in Tennessee.

Officers inquired about the sexual activities of the married couple, and they admitted they had sex within the past day, as they were married. Officer Paul Hughes took Feda into custody and charged him with felony statutory rape of his wife. Feda remains in jail, while his wife was removed from their home and taken into the custody of DCS.

Man flees MNPD & THP at 170 MPH… until he runs out of gas — Jamal Nobrega @itsjamal__ arrested

26-year-old Jamal Nobrega, who is well known in the underground car racing scene across the U.S. & Mexico, took multiple mid-state agencies on a chase overnight, with speeds reaching over 170 mph. Metro Nashville Police initially observed the 2020 Chevrolet Camero on I-65 N bearing a non-legal license with just ‘LTX’ printed on the plate in red and white lettering. The passenger side of the car was distinct with vinyl lettering of “ITSJAMAL__” on the window. After being initially paced at 85 in a 70 mph zone a traffic stop was attempted, however, the driver fled at high rates of speed. MNPD AirOne and a THP helicopter picked up the pursuit, observing the vehicle ‘blacked out’ several times (turned off all lights) in an attempt to avoid being tracked. Eventually, the driver was taken into custody in Sumner County and transported back to Nashville. When asked why he eventually stopped the chase, Jamal Nobrega replied “because I ran out of gas”. After being charged with reckless driving and felony evading arrest, he was sent home on pre-trial release.
