DUI: Matthew Thomas Jr. consumes 24oz beer before driving

53-year-old Matthew Thomas Jr. flagged down an officer on East Old Hickory Blvd. in the late hours of November 20th, indicating that he had been in a car crash. Officers confirmed the accident via dispatch, where the other party was waiting to speak with them. The other driver eventually came to where they were and alerted officers of the possible injury he sustained. Officers could see Thomas was visibly intoxicated, and he even admitted to consuming a 24oz beer 2 hours prior but also stated that he waited an hour and a half for the police at the scene, leaving only 30 minutes between when he consumed the beer and when he began driving. Thomas kept repeating that he “pulled over to speak to the police and not the other way around.” He also confirmed that he rear-ended the other vehicle. Thomas refused to provide a blood sample, was read an implied consent form, and was taken into custody for driving under the influence and implied consent.

DUI: Yesenia Juarez has “two glasses of wine and a beer” before driving

29-year-old Yesenia Juarez was changing her tire in the early hours of Sunday morning when officers confronted her because she was in a traffic lane. She told officers that her tire was flat, so she was changing it, but the frame of her car was pressing into her vehicle, so it wasn’t an issue that changing a tire could fix. Officers then asked Juarez if she had anything to drink, and she told them that she had several drinks. While conversing with the officers, Juarez slurred her words, prompting them to conduct a Field Sobriety Test, which she performed poorly on. Officers attempted to read implied consent to Juarez, but she refused to listen. While in the patrol car, Juarez admitted to having “two glasses of wine and a beer.” Juarez was taken into custody and charged with DUI and implied consent.

DUI: Omar El-Assuli crashes after leaving Soho Lounge in Nashville

26-year-old Omar El-Assuli was involved in a single-vehicle accident on November 25th. Officers arrived and noticed that El-Assuli had a strong cologne odor while chewing some gum, causing them to believe he was using it to cover a scent. He advised officers that he had fallen asleep while driving and thought he hit a pole but was unaware of how the crash happened. Officers observed him to be visibly intoxicated as he told them he was coming from the Soho Lounge. El-Assuli told officers he had a handgun, so they secured it, and then he agreed to sobriety tests and performed poorly. El-Assuli was taken into custody for driving under the influence and possession of a handgun while under the influence.

DUI: Schuyler Ryan McCurdy crashes car after drinking at his job, a local bar

38-year-old Schuyler Ryan McCurdy was involved in a car accident on Dry Creek Rd. on November 26th. Officers arrived and observed that McCurdy was visibly intoxicated. They asked him how much he had to drink, and he replied, “I don’t know, too much.” He advised officers that he was drinking at his job at a local bar prior to driving and declined ride offers from his coworkers. McCurdy agreed to take sobriety tests, performed poorly, and was taken into custody for driving under the influence.

DUI: Michael Hawkins has “one or two shots” before driving

36-year-old Michael Hawkins was jailed Friday morning after reports of a driver asleep behind the wheel. When police arrived, they observed Hawkins in the driver’s seat with the car still running. When he noticed the officers approaching, he attempted to drive away. Police ordered him to stop. He complied and stumbled out of his vehicle. When police asked for Mr. Hawkin’s license, he was reluctant and handed officers a handgun carry permit instead. The officer asked if there was a handgun in the vehicle, to which Mr. Hawkins replied that there was a gun in the center console. The gun was within reaching distance. When the police asked him how much he had to drink, he admitted to having “one or two shots” earlier that day. He was visibly intoxicated and leaning on his vehicle to maintain his balance. It was noted that Mr. Hawkins smelled strongly of cologne, which officers believed was a cover scent. Officers later noticed a slight smell of alcohol on his breath despite the overpowering scent of his cologne. He consented to sobriety tests, performed poorly, and was taken into custody. During the vehicle search, officers located the handgun and a revoked license. Mr. Hawkins does not have any prior convictions or DUI.

DUI: Nicholas Burks causes accident, tells officers he “did not run into anything”

28-year-old Nicholas Tre’Shun Burks was involved in a vehicle accident on I-24 East on November 19th. Burks told officers he was driving when he heard a loud pop but insisted he “did not run into or hit anything.” Officers observed Burks’s car with significant damage on the front end, inconsistent with his statements. Burks was visibly intoxicated, consented to sobriety tests, performed poorly, and provided two breath samples, resulting in 0.136% BAC and 0.141% BAC. He was taken into custody for driving under the influence.

DUI: Thomas Fields drinks “two beers” at Hooters before driving

55-year-old Thomas Fields was jailed on Saturday after causing an accident on Gallatin Pike North and Conference Drive. Fields admitted to rear-ending another vehicle with his Dodge Charger at the traffic light. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to Skyline ER for the injuries he sustained during the accident.  Officers observed Fields using his vehicle to balance himself. He had a noticeable odor of alcohol coming from his breath, along with watery, glassy eyes. He admitted to officers that he had two beers before the accident while he was at Hooters. Fields agreed to a breath sample and blew a .229% BAC on a breathalyzer.

DUI: Leandro Arteaga rear-ends vehicle leaving restaurant

23-year-old Leandro Arteaga was jailed on November 18th after causing an accident on Nolensville Pike. When police arrived, they observed Arteaga beside his damaged vehicle. He admitted to driving and stated that he had rear-ended a car as he was coming from a restaurant. Officers could smell alcohol coming from his breath as he spoke and noticed his glassy, bloodshot eyes. Arteaga then performed poorly on sobriety tests and was taken into custody.

DUI: Jamisha Malone falls asleep behind wheel of car in downtown Nashville

30-year-old Jamisha Malone was jailed on November 19th after police observed a red Honda Civic blocking traffic near 1st and Broadway. The officer approached the vehicle to find Malone asleep behind the wheel with the key in the ignition. The officer knocked on the window to wake her. She stumbled out of her vehicle and was asked to consent to sobriety tests. Ms. Malone performed poorly on the tasks and was taken into custody. While at booking, she blew a .163% BAC on a breathalyzer.

DUI: Stuart Michael Cassidy lies about having Cerebral Palsy to avoid sobriety tests

31-year-old Stuart Michael Cassidy was involved in a car accident on November 18. Ashley Brooke Jones-Rabotte and Clifton Barnes witnessed this and advised officers Cassidy exited the vehicle with a bottle of Crown in his jacket and asked,” Do you think I can throw this away?” Cassidy told officers that he did not have anything to drink and the reason he crashed was that he was driving too fast. Cassidy was visibly intoxicated and did not want to answer any more questions. Officers noticed a liquor bottle outside Cassidy’s vehicle. Cassidy told them that he could not perform sobriety tests because he had cerebral palsy, so they mirandized him and placed him in custody for driving under the influence.
