Man transports friend who shot himself in downtown Nashville on bird scooter to hotel, hides gun — Corey Oakes arrested

25-year-old tourist Corey Oakes, from Kentucky, is charged with tampering with evidence and public intoxication after he carried his friend, who shot himself in the leg in downtown Nashville while drinking, on a bird scooter back to the Cambria hotel and parked him at the entrance while he returned to their room upstairs to hide the gun. When police responded to the shooting call at the hotel they located the victim and Oakes, who was extremely intoxicated, and admitted his friend “may have possibly shot himself” and admitted to returning the gun to their room. Oakes is free on pre-trial release.

ARREST WARRANT / AFFIDAVIT:
ON 12/4/2021 POLICE RESPONDED TO 118 8TH AVE SOUTH (CAMBRIA HOTEL) FOR A CALL FOR SERVICE INVOLVING A MALE SHOT IN THE LEG. ONCE ON SCENE POLICE FOUND OUT THE DEFENDANT WAS WITH THE VICTIM AT THE TIME OF THE SHOOTING, AND AFTER ARRIVING AT 118 8TH AVE SOUTH, THE DEFENDANT LEFT THE INDIVIDUAL SHOT BY THE ENTRANCE AND WENT TO ROOM #709.

POLICE WENT TO ROOM #709 AND THE DEFENDANT ANSWERED THE DOOR AND SPOKE WITH THE POLICE. THE DEFENDANT TOLD POLICE HIS FRIEND POSSIBLY SHOT HIMSELF IN THE LEG, SO HE CARRIED HIM ON A BIRD SCOOTER FROM BROADWAY TO THE HOTEL ENTRANCE, AND LEFT HIM AT THE ENTRANCE BEFORE RETURNING TO ROOM #709.

ONCE AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE HOTEL, LOCATED AT 118 8TH AVE SOUTH, THE DEFENDANT BROUGHT THE GUN USED IN THE INCIDENT INTO THE HOTEL AND UP TO ROOM #709, AND PLACED THE WEAPON IN THE VICTIM’S BAG. POLICE OBTAINED CONSENT TO SEARCH THE ROOM FROM THE DEFENDANT AND FOUND THE FIREARM IN A RED BAG LOCATED AT THE FOOT OF THE BED.

POLICE LOCATED SEVERAL LIVE ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION IN THE RED BAG, AS WELL AS A SINGLE SPENT SHELL CASING WHICH THE DEFENDANT STATED WAS FROM THE INCIDENT. THE DEFENDANT TOLD POLICE HE WAS VERY INTOXICATED AND HAD RECENTLY CONSUMED TWO TO THREE LONG ISLAND ICE TEAS AS WELL AS TWO BLOODY MARY’S. DEFENDANT HAD SLURRED SPEECH AND A SMELL OF ALCOHOL ABOUT HIS PERSON. DUE TO THE DEFENDANT’S STATEMENTS, AS WELL AS EVIDENCE COLLECTED FROM THE SCENE, POLICE TOOK THE DEFENDANT INTO CUSTODY.
