25-year-old Makayla Coffman was jailed on Saturday night after hopping into the driver’s seat while drunk and driving away during a police investigation of the original driver, who was also driving under the influence. Officers were flagged down on 4th and Broadway by concerned citizens stating there was a driver asleep at the wheel. Officers removed the driver from the vehicle and began evaluating her welfare. Then Coffman, the passenger, woke up, got into the driver’s seat, and began driving away. The vehicle was stopped, and she was able to exit but was very unsteady on her feet, had slurred speech, and smelled of alcohol. She agreed to a sobriety test and performed poorly, and her breathalyzer returned a 0.98% BAC.
Makayla L. Coffman of Grants Hill Church Road in Montross, VA, was booked into the Metro Nashville Jail and charged with driving under the influence (DUI). A judicial commissioner set her bond at $1,500, and the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department gave her pre-trial release from their facility.
