59-year-old James Broughton struck Algernon Thompkins, a traffic control officer, with his red Chevrolet Camaro at the intersection of Demonbreun Street and 3rd Avenue South on December 6th.  Thompkins alerted officers of the incident and stated Broughton refused to follow his traffic control directions, causing his Camaro to bump into the officer’s leg. Then, he said that he moved toward the driver’s side door to speak with Broughton, which sparked an argument, and during the verbal dispute, Broughton moved his Camaro forward, running over the officer’s left foot, putting him in pain. Thompkins pointed out the vehicle to officers, and they conducted a traffic stop. Broughton spoke with officers and admitted to disobeying Thompkins’s traffic directions but denied running into him or over his foot with his Camaro. Officers reviewed partial video footage of the incident, which showed Broughton slowly moving forward and bumping into Thompkins’s leg while he was directing traffic. Broughton was taken into custody for aggravated assault.
