28-year-old Maria Leverette was sitting in her blue sedan in front of Antioch Park late on April 3rd. Officers observed this as they patrolled the area, so they approached her to speak. Leverette took her car keys out of her pocket and put them in the ignition to roll the window down. Officers noticed the car reeked of marijuana and asked Leverette about it. Leverette stated she had smoked earlier in the day and that there was a small amount of weed in the car. During a search of Leverette’s vehicle, officers found an open bottle of alcohol in addition to the small amount of marijuana Leverette mentioned earlier. As officers continued investigating, they noticed Leverette had a slight odor of alcohol and was showing signs of impairment. Leverette was then asked to take sobriety tests, which she consented to and performed poorly on. When officers Mirandized her, Leverette stated she had “three shots, about 45 minutes ago.” Leverette agreed to provide a blood sample and then was taken into custody for driving under the influence.
